What is Melia Dubia?

Melia dubia is a fast-growing hardwood species ideally suited for biomass production and commercial forestry applications. Known for its rapid development, the tree can reach heights of up to 10 metres with a trunk circumference of 40–50 cm within just two years of planting.

Its ability to thrive under high-density planting conditions makes it an attractive option for maximising yields per hectare, delivering substantial biomass production within a relatively short timeframe.

A Renewable Resource with Exceptional Regrowth

One of Melia dubia's most valuable characteristics is its natural coppicing ability. After harvesting, the tree regenerates from the remaining stump, allowing for up to three harvest cycles before replanting is required.

This regenerative capability significantly reduces establishment costs while supporting long-term productivity and sustainability.

The species also naturally sheds its lower branches when grown at high density, promoting increased trunk girth, reducing maintenance requirements, and contributing organic mulch back into the soil.

Ideal Growing Conditions

Melia dubia performs best in equatorial and tropical climates, particularly in regions that receive:

  • More than 1,600 mm (64 inches) of annual rainfall
  • Rainfall distributed across 8–9 months of the year
  • Warm growing conditions with minimal exposure to severe weather

While the species adapts well to a wide range of soil types and topographical conditions, it requires protection from strong winds to ensure optimal growth and stand stability.
